Researchers at Bar-Ilan University in Israel have created nanometric diamond particles that might be applied to the skin for medical and aesthetic purposes by combining techniques from nanotechnology and optics. A safe laser-based optical approach that can measure the penetration of nanodiamonds into the different layers of skin was also stated by the researchers in their study that was published in the academic journal ACS Nano.

Due to a number of restrictions, medical treatments applied through the skin, such as nicotine patches to quit smoking, are not widely accessible. Particle sizes should not exceed 100 nanometers for the procedures. Another difficult task to date has been developing a precise instrument for handling such small particles.

But with the creation of this most recent technique, the researchers assert that they can also ascertain the location and concentration of the penetrated particles within body tissue in a non-invasive manner, thus obviating the necessity for a biopsy.

Professor Dror Fixler, Director of the Institute of Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials at Bar-Ilan University and a part of the research team, said, "This is a huge achievement in dermatology and in optical engineering."

Researchers' millionth-of-a-millimeter-sized nanodiamonds have been shown to be excellent antioxidants, ensuring that the particles entering the body are both medicinal and safe. Prior to injection into the body, their chemical qualities enable them to be coated with medication.

Explosions inside a sealed container are what create the nanodiamond particles. The carbon particles in the explosives fuse as a result of the high temperature and pressure. Since the nanodiamonds are so tiny, they can even enter cells without doing any damage.

The researchers were convinced that this novel approach might pave the way for the development of skin-applied medications as well as cutting-edge cosmetic products utilizing advanced nanotechnology.
